Hot Water Heaters
The water from your taps and showers needs to move through a water heater so that it comes out hot, but there’s a few different types of heaters that work in different ways. Different types of hot water systems are better in different situations, so it’s best to get advice based on your particular needs and the set-up of your home.
Electric Hot Water Heaters
Electric heaters are probably the cheapest option for purchase and installation costs. They’re a bit more expensive to run than gas heaters, and they also produce more greenhouse gas emissions.
Gas Hot Water Heaters
A gas hot water heater runs on natural gas or LPG. It’s generally cheaper to run than most electric heaters, but the system itself usually costs a little bit more. A gas system needs ventilation, so it’s often installed outside, or inside with a flue pipe to remove incomplete combustion.
Instantaneous Water Heaters
An instantaneous heater heats water as and when you need it. They’re usually more efficient than a tank storage system (a regular gas or electric system) because they don’t have to keep water hot for long periods of time. They can be powered by either electricity or gas.
A heat pump system works by transferring heat to the water, rather than producing it directly (usually it absorbs vapour from the air, pressurising it and causing it to heat up). It works on low electricity consumption and is more energy efficient than a normal electric hot water heater.
A solar heater requires solar panels or collectors outside to absorb thermal energy from the sun. A solar system often comes with an energy booster as well – powered by electricity or gas – so you still get hot water when there’s not enough sunlight.
